Sovereignty lands 151st Run for the Roses

Commentary on the 151st Kentucky Derby by Churchill Downs Track Announcer Travis Stone

The 7-1 chance Sovereignty under jockey Junior Alvarado for trainer William Mott, captured the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the American Triple Crown series at Louisville in Kentucky on Saturday.

Sovereignty upstaged the 3-1 favourite Journalism in the stretch battle, covering the 10 furlong trip in 2 minutes, two-and-one-fifth of a second.

42-1 shot Neoequos which is part-owned by Jamaican trainer Ian Parsard, was very prominent from the get go and even led the field off the final bend before running out of steam.

It was the first Kentucky Derby victory for jockey Alvarado and the second for trainer Bill Mott.

The second leg of the triple crown series, the 150th Preakness Stakes will be run on May 17 at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
