2010 winners Spain equalled the third widest margin of victory in World Cup history, while another former champion, Germany were stunned at FIFA's showpiece on Wednesday. The Spaniards hammered CONCACAF side Costa Rica 7-0 with Ferran Torres getting a double.
In the meantime, another CONCACAF side, Canada, marked their return to the World Cup stage after an absence of 36 years with a 1-0 loss at the hands of European giants Belgium.
In the day’s other games, Morocco and Croatia played out a 0-0 draw, while Japan scored two late goals to shock former champions Germany 2-1.
Thursday’s action will see Switzerland opposing Cameroon at 5:00 am Jamaica time; Uruguay facing South Korea at 8:00;Portugal opposing Ghana at 11:00 and favourites Brazil opening their account against Serbia at 2:00 pm.
