Stona and Ricketts named National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year

Roje Stona and Shanieka Ricketts are the RJRGLEANER National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year respectively for 2024. They took the prestigious accolades at Friday's night's 64th awards gala at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

Stona threw an Olympic record of 70 metres to capture gold in the men's discus event at the Paris Olympic Games. Olympic 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson was runner-up to the sportsman of the year.

Ricketts leapt 14.87 metres to claim silver in the women's triple jump at the Paris Games. Olympic 400m hurdles finalist Rushell Clayton was runner-up to Ricketts.  

Meanwhile, Stona's Olympic gold medal throw won the People's Choice Award. It was Jamaica's first discus gold in Olympic history.

MVP Track Club became the first institutional recipient of the iconic award for their contribution to the sport of track field with the production of multiple track and field stars.  

The Chairman's Award was presented to GC Foster College.
