Reigning Caribbean drivers' champion David Summerbell Jr. was a fraction of a second off his track record in snatching pole position for two of Monday's top races in the Jamaica Race Driver’s Club (JRDC) "Carnival of Speed" race meet at Dover Raceway in St. Ann on Sunday.
Summerbell Jr. was three-tenths of a second slower than his 2008 record of one minute 18.4 seconds using slick tyres in the thunder sport class qualifying.
He was the only driver to break the one minute and 20 second barrier, with Douglas Gore in his Audi TT more than two seconds behind. Summerbell Jr, the 7-time Caribbean champion, returned with one minute 18.89 seconds in the modified production qualifying, with Gore clocking one minute 19 seconds.
"It’s been a tense day with all the competition and there have been ups and downs for everybody, but we’ve been consistently quick this weekend running in the one eighteen bracket, which is very fast. I’m happy, I’m on pole, which is where I want to be, (while Gore) is half second behind us … I’m not sure if that’s enough," Summerbell Jr. said.
