Jamaica recorded its highest ever score at a Netball World Cup in making a strong start to their gold medal push on Friday at the 2023 edition in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Sunshine Girls crushed Sri Lanka 105-25, making it Jamaica's first 100+ scoreline at a Netball World Cup.
The Jamaicans who rested captain Jhanielle Fowler who was rested for the first three quarters, stormed to a 26-5 first quarter lead and scored another 26 to Sri Lanka's 6 for a 52-11 half time lead.
The Sunshine Girls outscored their opponents 23-7 in the third quarter at the of which they led 75-18 and 30-7 in the final stanza.
The Jamaicans are looking to better third placed finishes at the 1991, 2003 and 2007 editions.
In other results on the opening day, Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago were beaten 72-27 by New Zealand, Australia hammered Zimbabwe 86-30, Uganda beat Singapore 79-37; Tonga outscored Fiji 56-51; South Africa defeated Wales 61-50; England drubbed Barbados 90-29, while Malawi beat Scotland 55-49.
The Sunshine girls will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Wales starting at 4:00 am Jamaica time.
