As the Tivoli Gardens
Football fraternity continues to come to grips with the death of overlapping
wingback Oraine Simpson, Coach Lenworth Hyde has described the player as one
who was an example to others.
The 26-year-old defender died following an alleged stabbing incident in Tivoli Gardens Tuesday night.
Simpson was called to the national squad this year under then Coach John Barnes and played for the Reggae Boyz in matches against St. Kitts and Nevis, Ecuador and El Salvador.
He was not called to the current national camp because he was recovering from a shoulder injury.
Coach Hyde says he was looking forward to a return for Tivoli's away game against Harbour View on Sunday.
"We sent him to the doctor yesterday to get a final look at this shoulder and the doctor passed him fit to play so he would have played in the next few matches that we have but to see that he went home and met his demise is devastating. It's a blow to the team ... he was the captain of the team at the start of the season because of his discipline and his attitude towards training," he aid.
It was Simpson who scored the match winning penalty for Tivoli Gardens against Arnett Gardens on the final day of the 2008-2009 Digicel Premier League season.
That win gave Tivoli victory in a three team battle for the Premier League championship.
