Twelfth seeded Australian Samantha Stosur, had to work hard to overcome 42 year old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm, 6-3 7-6 .
Two time Grand Slam winner Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, upset third seed Sara Errani of Italy, 6-4 6-4 to reach the third round.
Sixth seed Jelena Jankovic and former world number one, Ana Ivanovic -who thrashed Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 6-3 6-0 also advanced.
