Windies T20 World Cup semis in jeopardy

Voice of West Indies T20 captain Shai Hope

The West Indies chances of a semi-final spot at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup have been dealt a huge blow, as the Caribbean men were brushed aside by 9 wickets by South Africa in their second Group 2 game in the Super 8 stage in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Set 177 runs to win, South Africa raced to victory at 177-1 in 16.1 overs. Captain and player of the match Aiden Markram led the way with an unbeaten 82 off just 46 balls including 7 fours and 4 sixes, while Quinton de Kock made 47 and Ryan Rickelton an unbeaten 45. Roston Chase was the lone wicket taker with 1-46.

Earlier, a record 8th wicket partnership of 89 between Romario Shepherd 52 not out, and Jason Holder 49, rescued the West Indies from 83-7 to post 176-8. Shepherd hit 4 sixes and 3 fours in his 37 ball knock, while Holder was run out, having cracked 4 fours and 3 sixes.

The Windies batting had struggled against the pace of the South Africans, as only Brandon King 21 and Shai Hope 16 reached double figures among the top five batters.

Lungi Ngidi ended with 3-30, while Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch had 2 wickets each. Windies captain Shai Hope says his team took too long to adjust to the new surface.

The Windies will close out their Super 8 stage campaign on Sunday against India. South Africa are now through to the semi-finals by virtue of Thursday's victory.
