The West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) has refuted all claims made by Tony Cozier, journalist and cricket commentator, in an article written in the Trinidad Newsday newspaper.
The article was about the stand-off between WIPA and Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) about Guyana's participation in the Champions’ League
WIPA says Cozier accuses it of “brinkmanship” and attacks its style of negotiation.
According to WIPA, the article did not present a balanced point of view and regretted that Cozier did not speak with them to get the full understanding of the situation.
WIPA says Cozier did not seek its version of the events that ultimately led to the Guyanese government having to step in to break the deadlock between the GCP and the Players' Association.
The body also denied that it had threatened strike action unless its demands were met.
WIPA has also accused the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and its satellite boards of pressurizing players to sign contracts without involving the Association in the process.
According to WIPA, issues were only resolved at the 'eleventh hour' due to the ill-preparedness of the WICB and its satellite boards.
It said the WICB was undermining an established procedure by sending contracts directly to players instead of routing them through WIPA, which scrutinises various components of the contracts, including match fees, injury payments, drug-testing and insurance on behalf of the players.
