Animal feed shortage now a national crisis - JAS

JAS President Lenworth Fulton, and St. Mary based poultry farmer Levi Walsh

The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) has characterised the animal feed shortage across the country as 'crisis' level.

The Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries had reported on Friday that it was monitoring the situation closely, but was satisfied that the supply of feed was not significantly below what was expected, and normal supply levels would have been available over the weekend.

This statement has been challenged however by JAS President Lenworth Fulton, who told Radio Jamaica News in an interview that the situation has "worsened significantly" since Friday.

Mr Fulton warned that local farmers are in danger of losing millions of dollars worth of livestock.

Levi Walsh, a St Mary based poultry farmer, also told Radio Jamaica News that he has lost more than 100 birds - between three and four weeks old- due to lack of feed at his Highgate based farm.

Mr Walsh has also criticised his supplier, Caribbean Broilers, which provides animal feed through Nutramix, for failing to communicate with customers about the problem.

He said poultry farmers have been left to fend for themselves and are in need of suitable alternatives.

Mr Walsh said the feed shortage has lasted for a few months, but worsened in the last three days.

He said he was last able to purchase feed through Jamaica Broilers on Saturday but that his birds are now going into shock from lack of food.
