Hutchinson gives details on Holland Agro-Economic Zone development

J.C. Hutchinson
J.C. Hutchinson, Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Agriculture, on Tuesday gave details on the establishment of the Holland Agro-Economic Zone in St. Elizabeth.
Mr. Hutchinson said the property, which has 2,400 acres of arable land, has been divided into five-ten acre plots by Appleton and allocated to farmers.
"The land is below sea level, so instead of pumping water unto the land, water has to be pumped off of the land into the Black River," he noted.
He said part of the reason for Campari relinquishing the lease on the property last month was because it was costing them "between 800,000 and 1.5 million dollars per month to operate the pumps that are there."
Mr. Hutchinson gave the update during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
