IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva
By Javaughn Keyes
Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, says Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke distinguished himself among candidates assessed for the role of Deputy Managing Director.
During a press call on Monday morning with five journalists from across the region, Ms. Georgieva said Dr. Clarke's experience makes him the ideal candidate for the job.
"Dr. Clarke brings a unique perspective, first as a finance minister of a country that has transformed remarkably to the better over the years since he started in his position in 2018, and showing that it is possible to build strong institutions, to have a remarkably resilient economy. To overcome challenges is something that would benefit everybody in the membership, but especially countries struggling with similar challenges," she suggested.
Come October 31, Dr. Clarke will replace Antoinette Sayeh as one of three Deputy Managing Directors.
There is a First Deputy Managing Director above that rank.
"His role is to help me lead the fund and provide service to 190 members. And in that sense, he will have responsibilities towards programmes and engagements we have with our member states. He would speak on behalf of the fund and represent me in international fora. And he will have the important responsibility to bring, through his experience, the voice of small island states," said Ms. Georgieva.
Unlike the role of Managing Director with a five-year renewable term, Deputy Managing Directors have no set tenure requirement.
Dr. Clarke will be the first Caribbean national to hold this office.
