JMEA anxious about cost impact of new US charge for Chinese-built ships entering American ports

Executive Director of the Jamaica Manufacturers & Exporters Association Kamesha Turner Blake says she is eagerly anticipating the Jamaican Government's response to a proposal by the US to charge up to  US$1.5 million for Chinese-built vessels entering U.S. ports.

In February, The U.S. Trade Representative's Office proposed the cess as part of its investigation into China's growing domination of the global shipbuilding, maritime and logistics sectors.

Ms Turner Blake expressed concern that such a move would have a devastating effect on Expo 2025 and the economies of South Florida, Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean.

Forty-five per cent of the ships which ply the US Caribbean route are made in China.
