Most claims in “bad gas” saga honoured

The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has provided an update on the bad gas saga which occurred five years ago.

Following an announcement last May that payouts would be made, CAC Chairman, Donovan White, says most claims have been honored. He was speaking at a virtual discussion hosted by the CAC on Friday.

“The Commission has disbursed some J$23.88 million  for 336 claims. Petrojam Ethanol limited, transferred some J$24.5 million to the CAC on May 14, 2020 for disbursement to consumers who were affected. Persons who were approved, were those who submitted a claim to the CAC  and which were reviewed by the fuel investigation committee and determined to have been substantiated in part or in full thereof. The payment is a sign of good faith by the government of Jamaica to the affected motorists because the committee charged with investigating the incident could not assign liability,” he said.

Meanwhile,  the Consumer Affairs Commission has secured J$12.1 million  in refunds and compensation on behalf of aggrieved consumers between April 1 last year and January 31.

The Commission handled 1,470 complaints during the period - this was a five percent increase over the previous year.To date the Commission has resolved 986 of the 1,470 cases

The Commission noted that refunds to aggrieved consumers amounted to $10.2 million, while compensation was $1.9 million. The Commission also handled 488 requests for advice during the period.
