An amnesty is coming for vulnerable and elderly customers of the state-run National Water Commission, whose supply has been disconnected for unpaid bills.
This was announced on Sunday by Prime Minister Andrew Holness at the Annual Conference of the governing Jamaica Labour Party.
Giving a breakdown of the amnesty details, he said those persons whose supply has been disconnected "for debts two years or more outstanding," who are pensioners or "who have been assessed as being in need, based on the PATH beneficiary identification standards," will receive a total write-off of the debt by the NWC.
The government will also waive the disconnection fee, he said.
The amnesty is scheduled to take effect in January, and will last three months.
