The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) has come out strongly against the emerging practice of employers requiring workers to be vaccinated to continue in their posts.
President General of the BITU Kavan Gayle confirmed in an interview with Radio Jamaica News that the union has been receiving an increasing number of reports about the practice.
While expressing support for the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, he said the union had "serious difficulty with a forced vaccination measure and a threat for dismissal."
He added that he was not aware of any complaint so far regarding wrongful dismissal but is urging employers to be very careful in that regard.
Mr. Gayle asserted that protocols, policies and procedures have not been properly established to ensure accessibility of the vaccine.
He said the union will assist in educating workers about the vaccines and encouraging them to get inoculated.
"What we are strongly encouraging is accessibility to the vaccine (and) education around the vaccine for those who still may be hesitant," he explained.
He added that the trade unions had expressed their willingness to "collaborate with the employer grouping (the Jamaica Employers Federation) around improvement in the take-up in vaccination."
