The internationally renowned Boston Jerk Centre in Portland has suffered another major setback, following the closure of the facility by a team from the Ministry of Health.

The facility has been closed since Sunday.

Addressing Thursday morning's municipal corporation meeting, Chief Public Health Inspector Lorenzo Humes cited, among other things, poor sanitation and preparation of meat which was not approved for consumption.

Mr. Humes said for months, health inspectors have been monitoring the activities at the facility regarding food safety and sanitation.

He said closing the facility was a last resort.

"Having exhausted all the possible options, the environmental health team carried out a series of monitoring activities over the last year and before that, to get improvement of the facility. For the most part, they were unsuccessful. Hence, the decision was taken to advise the medical officer of health, in the month of August, that she should close the facilities," he disclosed.

Mr. Humes said four vendors have also been prosecuted for operating without a food handlers permit.

A vendor, who claimed he was embarrassed when public health authorities halted sales on Sunday, said they have been working assiduously to retrofit the facility in keeping with the Public Health Act.

He has described the closure as a heavy-handed approach, adding that it should not have been done in the middle of business.

The facility was ordered closed in 2016 for similar breaches.
