Cabinet approves recruitment of Cuban teachers

Fayval Williams

Cabinet has given approval for the recruitment of Cuban teachers.

Education Minister Fayval Williams disclosed at Wednesday's post Cabinet media briefing that an agreement for cooperation in education between Jamaica and Cuba has been given the green light.

It will enable Cuban teachers to be contracted on a needs basis.

But the minister insisted "the arrangement will not be at a disadvantage to the equally qualified Jamaican teachers who would be given priority in these instances."

She noted that since the inception of the programme, more than 370 Cuban specialist teachers and professors have served Jamaican schools and colleges teaching Spanish, Mathematics, Physical Education, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Integrated Science.
