A call is being made for the Government to review the electricity licence granted to the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS).
The suggestion has come from the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE), which represents workers at the utility company.
Amid the high number of complaints from JPS customers about sudden spikes in electricity bills, the union is recommending the establishment of a special taskforce to review the JPS licence and the company's billing system.
UCASE General Secretary, John Levy, says the latest furore over JPS bills should lead to major changes at the power company.
“I think that there are some fundamental things that may be need to be looked at. The bill needs to be rationalized and it also needs to be simplified. This every month adjustment, unpredictability and worry about what the next bill is going to look like is not good,” said Levy.
Levy also added that rising public anger over high electricity bills is taking a toll on JPS employees.
Yesterday, Energy Minister Fayval Williams suggested that a mechanism be put in place which will allow JPS customers to track their electricity usage for themselves.
