Lyttleton Shirley, Chairman of the Factories Corporation of Jamaica
Construction of the Morant Bay Urban Centre in St. Thomas is to begin on April 18.
Lyttleton Shirley, Chairman of the Factories Corporation of Jamaica, announced the date during a town hall meeting at the old Goodyear factory on Thursday evening.
"On the 18th of this month, you will see trucks rolling in, carrying marls to dump up the place. You will see, thereafter, demolition of buildings and you will see a staged construction progress to be completed in two years," he told the gathering.
The $6 billion urban centre will be constructed by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and financed by National Commercial Bank (NCB).
The facility will house more than 50 government and private sector entities including the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation, the parish court, a university, fast food establishments and business process outsourcing companies.
The development is seen as a one stop shop, which is expected to boost economic growth and job creation in St. Thomas.
