Don Crawford refuses to be cross examined at FINSAC Enquiry

Wednesday's sitting of the FINSAC Commission of Enquiry lasted for just over an hour after Don Crawford, the former Managing Director of the collapsed Century National Bank, refused to proceed with the cross examination.

Early in the sitting, Mr. Crawford's attorney, Anthony Levy, pointed out to Warrick Bogle, the Chairman of the Commission, that his client was to complete his statement made on June 7.

But this puzzled the commissioners who said as far as they knew the statement was complete and cross examination was to start on Wednesday, July 27.

"Mr. Levy, a lot of what Mr. Crawford was saying, I was able to pick out in the statement, so as far as I’m concerned, he was addressing the statement and we can talk and talk, (but) the ruling is what I’d given and that is the situation," Mr. Bogle said.

"I repeat my advice to Mr. Crawford, he’s not being allowed to complete his evidence he therefore, should not stay in the seat, he should walk away from this commission," Mr. Levy replied.

Commissioner Bogle then said Mr. Crawford had the option of continuing with the cross examination or taking his lawyers advice not to proceed.

After the second 10 minute break to resolve the matter, Mr. Crawford made his decision clear.

"In light of bias, prejudice and discrimination, I will abide by the advice of my attorney," he stated.

Mr. Bogle then adjourned the enquiry.
