Dr. Lynvale Bloomfield, Member of Parliament for Portland Eastern, was found stabbed to death at his home on Saturday morning.
Dr. Bloomfield, a member of the opposition People's National Party, was a two-term MP, winning on his first attempt in the December 2011 general election. He won re-election in the 2016.
Phillips
In a statement released shortly after news of Dr. Bloomfield's death broke, Dr. Peter Phillips, Opposition Leader and President of the People's National Party(PNP), said members of that party along with the entire Jamaica were "shocked, shaken and saddened by the news of the tragic death..."
Dr Peter Phillips said Dr Bloomfield devoted years of his life to service to the Jamaican people as a medical practitioner and as an elected representative.
“No Jamaican should ever have to suffer at the hands of criminals in their own country. The death of Dr Bloomfield must not be allowed to go unpunished, the police must employ what is necessary for a full and complete investigation and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.” he said.
He said "wanton acts of criminality across the country leave too many families and sectors in mourning and rob the nation of its best potential."
“On behalf of the entire PNP family, I extend condolences to Dr Bloomfield family, friends and associates.” Dr Phillips concluded.
Holness
Prime Minister Andrew Holness reacted to the killing of Dr. Bloomfield via Twitter, saying he was “shocked at the news…”
Mr. Holness extended condolences to Dr. Bloomfield’s family, colleagues and friends.
“Despite being on the other side of the aisle, we knew of his love for his constituents and Jamaica,” he said, adding that “the entire @jlpjamaica family and Jamaicans are mourning this morning.”
