Earthquake felt in parts of Jamaica

Professor Simon Mitchell, Sedimentary Geologist at the Earthquake Unit

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake was felt in sections of Jamaica Wednesday night.

The earthquake, which occurred about 8:02 p.m., was located approximately five kilometres south of Hope Bay in the north eastern parish of Portland.

Professor Simon Mitchell, Sedimentary Geologist at the Earthquake Unit, said it took place in the same area as the 5.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred in October last year.

Professor Mitchell said the eastern section of the island was mostly affected.

"Certainly Kingston, St. Andrew, Portland, St. Mary and St. Thomas. It was certainly felt in that area. [It was] relatively shallow, about 5.8 kilometres depth...so I suspect probably in Portland they probably got more shaking than we'd have felt necessarily in Kingston."

There was no immediate report of damage or injury.
