Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Kasan Troupe, says the ministry is targeting implementation of another 50 recommendations from the Jamaica Education Transformation Commission (JETC) report this fiscal year.

The Education Transformation Oversight Committee (ETOC) has supported a 23% progress in the implementation of an initial 136 of the total 365 recommendations.

Addressing a press conference at the University of the West Indies regional headquarters on Friday morning, Dr. Troupe said the additional recommendations will improve the progress report.

"We have reviewed those already and that will take us to 171 of the recommendations being actively pursued. So, Jamaica, we are not sitting down on this. We are working, and I'm just letting you know that within this year, with the budget that the government has provided, an additional 50 recommendations will be added, that will take us to 171 active work being done. And that will give us about 47% of the overall targets being addressed," she announced.

Noting that the ministry is in the final year of the short-term phase, the Permanent Secretary said it has achieved 15 of over 130 recommendations it began working on.

Launched in July 2020, the Jamaica Education Transformation Commission, chaired by Professor Orlando Patterson, was mandated to comprehensively review and assess Jamaica's education system, including its structure, operation and processes, and to recommend an action plan for change.
