Europe should brace for ‘harsh decisions’ if Trump is re-elected, says Lagarde

Europe should prepare for possible threats to its economy - including new US tariffs on its exports - if Donald Trump returns to the White House.

That's according to European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde.

The relationship between the EU and the US was strained during Trump's first term, after a trade spat between Washington and Brussels.

The United States is the EU's biggest source of foreign direct investment.

Ms. Lagarde says the best way for Europe to prepare for a second Trump term would be to bolster its single market, which ensures the free movement of goods, services, people and capital across 27 countries.
