The Ministry of National Security has rejected an application to grant refugee status to relatives of Joseph John, the former Haitian senator linked to the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.
The attorney representing the family, Donahue Martin, on Thursday told the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court that he was informed of the ministry's decision on Wednesday.
Mr. Martin said he will be appealing the decision.
The attorney argued that Mr. John's wife and two sons are in fear for their lives.
They were subsequently remanded to return to court on May 16.
The way has been cleared for the former senator to be extradited to the US.
The prosecution indicated to the court on Thursday morning that it wished to suspend the illegal entry case against Mr. John as it has no further interest in the matter.
Mr. John waived his rights to an extradition hearing on March 21.
