Fire at Khemlani Mart "under control"

Khemlani Mart owner Steve Khemlani and Emelio Ebanks, Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade

The Jamaica Fire Brigade says the fire at Khemlani Mart, Manor Centre in St. Andrew is under control.

Sixty firefighters from seven units have been battling the blaze since 7 o'clock this morning.

When Radio Jamaica News visited the location sometime after 8 o'clock, firefighters were seen breaking glass windows to allow thick smoke to exit the two storey building.

Owner Steve Khemlani said he received a call about the fire around 6:45 this morning.

He said an explosion of Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) transformers may have led to the fire, which broke out in the warehouse then travelled to a generator room where gas was present.

Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Emelio Ebanks, said the fire has been restricted to the back of the building.

He said firefighters have not yet been able to enter the building to "do a proper assessment" but it appears most of the damage is smoke and water related.

Mr. Ebanks said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
