Fisheries Authority to investigate cause of fish deaths in Rio Cobre after restocking

By Halshane Burke

Following reports that a number of the fish used to restock the Rio Cobre have died, the National Fisheries Authority says an investigation is to be conducted to determine the cause.

Concerns were raised about the viability of the fish stock after some fish at the Bog Walk location perished.

As part of the restocking requirement, an environmental expert is to conduct tests prior to, during and after the exercise to ensure the fish can survive in the new environment.

Radio Jamaica News was informed that the authorities expected some mortality as a result of the transition of the fish stock into the river.

The probe into the death of the fish is also to determine if the mortality level is within the projected rate.
