Foreign minister in talks with UK as traffic light system doesn't recognise fully vaccinated Jamaicans

The Jamaican Government has started discussions with the UK on its traffic light system which does not recognise fully vaccinated Jamaicans arriving in the country.

Jamaicans are designated as unvaccinated due to the amber categorisation and are required to submit COVID-19 tests and quarantine for 10 days.

The issue, which was reported by the Gleaner on Monday, is causing confusion for UK travellers, some of whom have been sharing their experience.

Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, who is overseas on official business, sought to address the concerns on her Twitter page on Monday.

Senator Johnson Smith said, in addition to their stoplight system, the UK has only recognised the vaccination programmes of a few countries such as members states of the EU.

She said the issue was brought to the attention of CARICOM for action last week.

The UK Government has also been engaged at a technical level.

Senator Johnson Smith said she intends to raise the issue in upcoming bilateral meetings of the United Nations.

She said, while there is lack of clarity on the specific formula, it is clear that the COVID-19 situation in Jamaica needs to improve.
