Government to re-examine process for expungement of criminal record

The government will be re-examining the process for expungement of a person's criminal record.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate on Tuesday, noted that there is currently a limit on the number of cases that may be considered for expungement and the sentence must not be more than five years.

He said the issue is one that requires careful consideration as there are persons who have served their time and are now making valuable contributions to society.

Mr Chuck reported that during the review period, the Criminal Records (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Board reviewed 1,849 applications for a range of offences.

Of the applications reviewed, 1,327, or 72 per cent, were approved.
