Gullies along Marcus Garvey Drive being cleaned

The cleaning of gullies along Marcus Garvey Drive has commenced and an attempt is being made to complete the clean up by the end of the week.

During a tour of the thoroughfare on Friday, Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie, issued instructions for the removal of garbage from gullies in the wake of flooding along sections of lower Marcus Garvey Drive on September 9.

Audley Gordon, Chief Technical Officer at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), said focus is on the Shoemaker Gully and the Tivoli Gully.

"Both gullies were experiencing clogs in several sections and work has started to clear those sections. We have removed a good portion of those debris and we're not relenting until the total area is cleared," he declared.

In the meantime, the NSWMA has not yet released the cost of cleaning the two gullies. But Mr. Gordon has promised full disclosure when the cost has been finalised.
