A work crew from the National Works Agency (NWA) patching a section of Mandela Highway in St. Catherine last night had to flee after gunmen shot at them.

It's reported that the team was about to complete repairs when armed men showed up.

The men enquired about the project and why certain individuals in the area had not been informed prior to work being carried out.

Stephen Shaw, NWA Communication Manager, told Radio Jamaican News that  the team sought assistance from the police but before the cops arrived, the shooting started.

With that, he said, "the workmen literally had to run for their lives."

As a consequence, the material they were using to repair the road was left behind, now creating a hazard for motorists traveling westward through Central Village are being urged to proceed with caution.

The discarded material, which can no longer be used, will be removed shortly, he said.
