Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has extended congratulations to Prime Minister Designate of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar, following her party's victory in the general election on Monday.
Preliminary figures show that the United National Congress won 26 of the 41-member parliament to the People's National Movement's 13, and Tobago People's Party 2.
In a congratulatory letter, Dr. Holness said Mrs. Persad-Bissessar's success at the polls is an indication of the confidence of the people in her leadership.
Meanwhile, in congratulating incumbent Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada on their victory, Prime Minister Holness said Jamaica anticipates a continued close bilateral relationship with that country.
And Opposition Leader Mark Golding in congratulating Mrs. Persad-Bissessar said the People of Trinidad and Tobago have once again demonstrated the strength of democracy in the region.
Minister Golding expressed confidence that Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago will continue working together in the spirit of regional unity and progress.
Meanwhile, Mr. Golding also congratulated Canada's Mark Carney and the Liberal Party on their success in Monday's elections.
The opposition leader said Canada has been an important partner to Jamaica, noting that the two countries enjoy strong ties based on mutual respect, cooperation and shared democratic values.
