Hunt underway for prisoner who shot policeman, fled custody

A hunt was underway for a prisoner who staged a dramatic escape after disarming and shooting a police officer at the National Chest Hospital in St. Andrew this afternoon.
 
The escapee, 31-year-old Ricardo Richards, also known as Kaka, of Nine Miles, Bull Bay in St. Andrew, had been taken to the hospital for treatment.  
 
Radio Jamaica News was informed that the prisoner attacked the policeman after his handcuffs were removed while being treated by a doctor.  
 
Dennis Brooks, Senior Communication Strategist for the Jamaica Constabulary Force, is asking members of the public to assist the police in locating the escapee.  
 
He said contrary to reports on social media, the escapee has not been recaptured and he has not been killed by the police." 
 
Mr. Brooks urged the public to assist the police in "trying to recapture him and bring him to justice...in the soonest possible time."
 
Richards was charged with murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as shooting with intent.
 
Radio Jamaica News was told that the injured policeman who was shot in the abdomen is undergoing surgery.
