India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has given an endorsement of Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith's candidature for the post of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
Dr. Jaishankar on Monday held talks with Mrs Johnson Smith ahead of President Ram Nath Kovind's visit to Jamaica later this month.
Taking to Twitter after the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar wrote that he was apprised of her candidature for Commonwealth Secretary-General.
He noted that her strong credentials and vision bode well for the future of the Commonwealth.
However, he did not comment on whether Jamaica would get India's vote at next month's Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Rwanda.
Singapore and the Maldives have already declared their support for Mrs Johnson Smith.
India's President is set to visit Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines from May 15 to 21 as he seeks to deepen his country's relationship with the Caribbean.
