JALGO: Contract workers at municipal corporations restive

By Clinton McGregor

The Jamaica Association of Local Government Officers (JALGO) has written to the Ministry of Local Government warning that contract workers employed in the municipal corporations across the island are restive.

The association said the mood stems from the failure of the Ministry to fulfill its commitment to transition the workers to permanent employment.

The last communication was on September 11, 2024 advising JALGO that implementation of the process of transitioning would begin November 1, the agreed date of implementation of the new organisational structure for municipal corporations.

But according to JALGO, since November 1, contract workers have been advised that municipal corporations have been told to await further instructions in relation to the transitioning of workers to permanent posts.

Additionally, some workers have had their existing contracts extended.

JALGO said workers are now being paid at minimum wage and to its knowledge are the only workers in the public sector who are paid at minimum wage.

It said the workers have decided that they will no longer accept what they term poor treatment from the government and have therefore mandated the union to serve a 72-hour strike notice which expired on Wednesday.
