JLP still ahead but more Jamaicans losing confidence in political parties - poll

There is an indication that more Jamaicans are losing confidence in the country's two main political parties with majority saying they would not vote if an election were called today.

This is according to the results of the latest RJRGLEANER commissioned Don Anderson poll.

Although more people say they would not vote, the findings show that the Jamaica Labour Party would come out ahead of the People's National Party if an election were to be called.

Voter apathy continues to plague Jamaica's political system with 34 per cent of respondents in the RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll indicating that they are not interested in voting for the country's two main political parties.

This is a three per cent increase in people indicating that they will not be voting when compared with last year.

Pollster Don Anderson says this trend has been continuing for several years, indicating more Jamaicans are becoming increasingly indifferent to the political process or the parties involved.

Seventeen per cent of the people interviewed said they were not sure if they would vote.

More Jamaicans say they would vote for the Jamaica Labour Party than for the People's National Party.

Thirty-one per cent of respondents say they would be more inclined to vote for the JLP, while 18 per cent say they would vote for the PNP.

This is a 13 per cent gap between the two parties - a widening of the nine per cent gap last year.

Mr. Anderson said the PNP continues to be strongest among older age groups while the JLP is attracting younger people.

The PNP's strongest support is among people aged 45 to 55, with 25 per cent in that age group saying they would vote for the party in the next election.

In that same age group, 29 per cent said they would vote for the JLP.

However, the Jamaica Labour Party attracted the majority of its support in the 25 to 35 age group, with 32 per cent, compared to 11 per cent for the PNP in that age group.

In the parish breakdown, the JLP is dominant in St. James, Westmoreland, Manchester and St. Mary and are strong in St. Ann and St. Thomas.

The PNP leads in St. Elizabeth and is competitive in Kingston and St. Andrew, Hanover, Trelawny, Portland, Clarendon and St. Catherine.

The RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll was conducted over the period July 16 to 25.

The field work was done among a sample of 1,113 Jamaicans.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three per cent.
