Despair is hanging over students and staff at the Lawrence Tavern Primary School in St. Andrew after fire destroyed a section of the institution around midday.

Radio Jamaica News understands that the fire was confined to the school's canteen.

The blaze was reportedly extinguished before the arrival of the Jamaica Fire Brigade.

Thirteen grade two students were also trapped in a classroom above the canteen after smoked blocked off their exit.

In a heroic move, teacher Marlene Nesbeth said she managed to save the children by removing several window panes.

"So we walked on the bank and then come down...and we were shouting for help and some men came out to help us. And we put [the children] down on the balcony and the men take them from me and then they bring a ladder for me to come down on," she recounted.

It's reported that millions of dollars in food items were lost in the blaze.

Students will now have to rely on the tuck shop for meals.
