A member of the Minimum Wage Advisory Commission says the Commission had not been consulted by the government prior to the announced increase in the National Minimum Wage.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced on Thursday that the National Minimum Wage will be increased from $15,000 to $16,000 for a 40 hour work week.

This will come into effect on June 1.

St. Patrice Ennis who is also President of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, speaking Friday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said, while the government is not obligated to consult with the Commission, the group is not being utilised for its intended purpose.

John Levy, General Secretary of Union of Clerical, Administrative And Supervisory Employees [UCASE] also highlighted what he said was a  need to change the approach to reviewing the National Minimum Wage.

He said the Minimum Wage Advisory Commission should adjust the review process.
