Local publishers moving to protect intellectual property rights during online learning

Latoya West-Blackwood, Chair, Book Industry Association of Jamaica

Members of the Jamaican book industry are moving to ensure their intellectual property rights are protected as schools transition to online learning and sharing of material from textbooks digitally.

Representatives of the Book Industry Association of Jamaica met with education minister Fayval Williams on Friday to discuss the issue.

Latoya West-Blackwood, Chairperson of the Book Industry Association of Jamaica, told Radio Jamaica News that there are concerns about copyright and downloading of  material from textbooks without an agreement in place.

Mrs West-Blackwood is hoping the ministry and the industry can arrive at an agreement on the use of  such material.

In a media release on Monday, the education ministry said it was committed to working with the industry as the country moves into utilizing e-books and more online platforms for teaching and learning.
