Lower House passes Sexual Harassment Bill

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck and Education Minister Fayval Williams

The House of  Representatives on Tuesday passed legislation aimed at combating sexual harassment in Jamaica.

The Sexual Harassment Protection and Prevention Bill contains provisions for dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace, schools, correctional institutions, places of safety, nursing homes, medical and psychiatric facilities, among other places.

Even with the passage of the bill however Justice Minister Delroy Chuck was still rasing doubts about its efficacy.

In his contributing to the debate on the bill, Mr Chuck said there was a need to strike a balance, which could pose a challenge to the tribunal hearing complaints in determining which kinds of touch at the workplace are inappropriate.

Education Minister Fayval Williams said her ministry has already started taking steps to address sexual harassment in schools.

With its passage in the Lower House, the bill will now go to the Senate.
