The man who was accused of killing a pregnant woman in Kellits, Clarendon on Sunday is believed to have committed suicide.

Superintendent Christopher Phillips, head of Operations for the Clarendon Police, told Radio Jamaica News that the man was found unresponsive in his jail cell Monday morning and taken to hospital.

The body of 21-year-old Tasheika McKay, who was eight months pregnant, was found in her bedroom about 2:00 p.m. with her throat slashed.

It's alleged that the man and Miss McKay had a dispute during which he accused her of being unfaithful.

Some residents in Kellits were reportedly jubilant on Monday when news of the man's death emerged.

The man had been attacked by a mob on Sunday in connection with the woman's murder. He had been rescued by the police who took him into custody.

'Jamaica in serious trouble'

Joyce Hewitt, Executive Director of Woman Inc, said the murder of the pregnant woman on Sunday is another sign that Jamaica is in serious trouble.

Mrs Hewitt said it is unfortunate that men cannot walk away from circumstances that result in violence.

She lamented that the incidents have become too frequent, despite all the efforts to stem domestic violence.

"I think it is time again to just stop and pause, and ask everybody in every community to try to talk to the persons if they can and ask them to seek help, because all too often, they are aware before it gets to such [murders]," she bemoaned.
