Mandeville mayor sheds light on reason for his resignation and about-turn

Donovan Mitchell

Mayor of Mandeville and Chairman of the Manchester Municipal Corporation Donovan Mitchell has shed light on the issues which led to his sudden resignation and about-turn on Thursday.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Mitchell said members of the Manchester Municipal Corporation had lost confidence in his ability to do his duties as mayor.

However, shortly after the letter was made public, Mr. Mitchell indicated he had changed his mind.

Speaking at a function in Mandeville on Monday, Mr. Mitchell said his resignation related to the operations of the municipal police.

"I have some officers that are municipal police officers and I've said to them that every single citizen of this parish has a right, irrespective of what they do. If they sell fish, if they sell clothes, if they do anything that is bad, they have a right and all must be heard."

"We had some problems. I think I did put some things in place, some persons weren't too happy with it. So I said to them, well, I would step back if you think that I'm not capable enough of managing...and sense prevailed and they said 'Listen me boss, that's not what we mean, so you need to stay so that we can have things done properly.'"

In the letter withdrawing his resignation on Thursday, Mr. Mitchell said he looks forward to continuing work with the municipal corporation.
