Senator Pearnel Charles Jr., Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation
The Government has provided additional funds to truck water to communities affected by drought conditions.
Senator Pearnel Charles Jr., Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, said on Tuesday that the Ministry will be ensuring that the timelines to provide water are met.
"We are going to be holding NWC, Rural Water and other agencies in account in ensuing that they meet the timelines that they have articulated to the various stakeholders as it relates to systems that they are putting in place to provide water to the people. Our job is to make sure that the work is done and that it is done efficiently and that it is done in a timely manner," he asserted.
Mr. Charles was speaking with the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) after a meeting with political representatives from St. Thomas, officials from the two entities, as well as the Water Resources Authority.
Plants in need of maintenance
The National Water Commission has been urged to identify pumping stations, treatment plants and supply systems in need of maintenance.
Senator Charles said the objective is to eliminate the need to truck water to communities, which has proven to be expensive and unsustainable.
He argued that lack of maintenance has caused systems to fall into disrepair a year or two after they go into operation.
