Murder convict Linton Berry released from prison after 35 years

Prince Moore

Linton Berry, who was sentenced to death in 1988 for killing his girlfriend, Paulette Zaidie, after she married another man, was released from prison on Friday.

Berry, now 71, walked out of the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre after serving nearly 35 years behind bars.

He was paroled due to health challenges.

Berry's killing of his girlfriend made major headlines in Jamaica in the late 1980s.

Mrs Zaidie was found murdered at the foot of Jack Hills, St Andrew on January 11, 1987.

Berry, a district constable and businessman at the time of the killing, claimed his firearm went off accidentally and shot her.

But at the trial, witnesses testified that Berry had threatened to kill Mrs Zaidie because, according to him, she secretly got married.

Mrs Zaidie's husband had testified that he received a telephone call from Berry that he had killed Mrs Zaidie and that the husband was lucky he wasn't in her company at the time.

Following an appeal, Berry was granted a re-trial but was again found guilty

In 1997, Berry was sentenced, this time to life in prison with the recommendation that he serve a period of 25 years before becoming eligible for parole.
