Murders, other major crimes down

Figures released from the Jamaica Constabulary Force indicate that murders have declined by 25 per cent up to February 7 when compared with the similar period last year.
 
Some 142 murders have been committed in Jamaica during the period compared with 191 last year.
 
The Kingston Western police division recorded the most murders with 20, followed by St. James with 16 and Clarendon with 15 murders.
 
St. Catherine South and Westmoreland each recorded 11 murders.
 
All other parishes recorded single digit murder figures.
 
The figures show that other major crimes have also decreased.  
 
Shooting declined by 33.3 per cent, rape by 56.3 per cent and robbery by 38 per cent.
 
There is also a one per cent reduction in break-ins. 
 
The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) has said it is happy with the reduction in murders and other crimes. 
 
PSOJ President Metry Seaga has urged the government to "continue to do everything" to combat the crime and violence plaguing the country.
