Murders rise to 1,498 in 2022

Jamaica recorded 1,498 murders last year, a two per cent increase over the 1,474 homicides committed in 2021.
 
The latest crime statistics from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) show that St. James recorded the most homicides with 198, followed by St. Catherine North with 145.
 
Other police divisions with high murder rates include Westmoreland with 140, St. Andrew South, 131 and St. Catherine South, 113.
 
Portland recorded the lowest number of murders last year with 14.
 
Shootings 
 
The JCF is reporting an eight per cent reduction in the number of shootings reported for 2022 when compared with the previous year.
 
Some 1,162 shootings were reported in 2022, as against 1,263 for 2021.
 
Portland recorded the greatest decline in the number of shootings, moving from 12 in 2021 to five last year.
 
The Kingston Central police division was next with a 41 per cent reduction in the number of shooting incidents.
 
In contrast, St. Elizabeth recorded an 83 per cent increase in the number of shootings, with 33, in comparison to 18 for 2021.
 
Robberies 
 
Robberies and break-ins increased last year over 2021.
 
Break-ins were up eight per cent, moving to 977, compared with 908 reported instances for 2021. Robberies jumped 18 per cent to 914 for 2022, some 141 more than the 773 reported in 2021.
 
St. Elizabeth had the highest increase in robberies, with 72, up from the 30 reported in the previous year.
 
Clarendon recorded the greatest increase in break-ins after 122 incidents were recorded last year, compared with 52 recorded in 2021.
 
Containing crime 
 
Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson has expressed confidence that crime will be contained this year.
 
He said plans that were interrupted in 2020 and 2021, are now in place and started to reap benefits towards the end of last year. 
 
General Anderson said members of the JCF are committed to executing their duties and the country should continue seeing the results.
