NEPA, Windalco criticised for not alerting residents to Rio Cobre contamination

Sydney Rose, Councillor for the Treadways Division

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and mining company Windalco are facing criticism for the failure to alert residents of the Charlemont Housing Scheme in St. Catherine about the discharge of effluent into a river behind the community.

Councillor for the Treadways Division, Sydney Rose, told Radio Jamaica News that he reported the matter to NEPA on Wednesday.

Mr. Rose said a NEPA representative indicated that the agency was informed about the spill on Tuesday afternoon.

But the councillor is concerned that citizens were not informed either by NEPA or Windalco about the discharge.

Mr. Rose said the water felt "acidic" and caused irritation to his eyes and respiratory system.

He therefore urged the entities to alert residents of St. Catherine not to use the water.

NEPA says a team will be going to the site of the spill today.
