Clear terms of  reference and the assurance that there will not be victimisation are among the guarantees a labour rights activist is seeking ahead of  the fact-finding mission being dispatched to Canada to look into reports of  poor conditions facing Jamaican farm workers.

According to Chris Ramsaroop, organizer of  Justice for Migrant Workers in Canada, the Jamaican workers might be apprehensive about providing information to the fact-finding mission.

Ramsaroop, speaking Friday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said there must be a firm commitment from the outset that they will not be victimised.

The fact-finding mission has been appointed by Labour Minister Karl Samuda to investigate the working conditions of  Jamaicans employed under the Canadian farm work programme.

The six-member tripartite team will travel to Canada to observe operations, speak with the workers and provide a report to Mr. Samuda.

The Labour Minister had initially dismissed acounts of poor and degrading treatment of some Jamaican farm workers in Canada, saying he had observed no such problem when he visited several of the farms to which they are attached.

Accordingly, he accused persons in media of creating mischief in relation to the matter.

With more first-hand accounts of the problems cited by the workers themselves coming out this week, some on Beyond the Headlines, however, there has now been a change of approach by the Minister.
