COVID-19 has claimed the life of  a senior parish judge in St. Ann.

Stanley Clarke who served the St. Ann and Trelawny Parish Courts died on Monday.

He had been hospitalised in critical condition after contracting the virus.

Chief Justice Bryan Sykes said the death of  Judge Clarke has shocked the judiciary.

He said Judge Clarke was a dedicated public servant who worked at the Ministry of Health and the Attorney General's Chambers before joining the judiciary as a judge.

Judge Clarke served in several parish courts during his career on the bench.

Attorney-at-law Anthony Williams told Radio Jamaica News that Judge Clarke's passing was a great loss to the legal fraternity.

He described him as a "very astute" and a judge who  gave "very prompt decisions".

The two men worked together in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions earlier in their careers, and according to Mr Williams, Stanley Clarke was a prosecutor who took his job quite seriously.

News of  the judge's death came a day after an additional 14 people in Jamaica died from COVID-19.

Westmoreland and Kingston each recorded four deaths; three occurred in St Ann, two in St Elizabeth and one in St Mary.

Two other deaths are being investigated.
